Barcode Label Size Guide
The right barcode size depends on the encoded value, barcode format, printer, label material, scanner, and reading distance. Use these starting points to make a test label, then scan it at the real size before printing a batch.
Practical starting sizes
Small part or shelf label
Start around 35–45 mm wide for a short Code 128 value such as SKU-1234. Keep the bars and quiet zones sharp and unclipped.
Inventory or bin label
Start around 50–70 mm wide for values such as BIN-A04-R2 or INV-000123. Allow extra width as the value gets longer.
Carton or pallet label
Use a larger barcode when it will be scanned from farther away. Make the label easy to find and test it with the actual handheld scanner.
These are starting points, not a universal specification. A long value needs more linear-barcode width even when the label height stays the same.
Choose the format before shrinking the label
- Code 128: a strong default for internal inventory, part, asset, and work-order IDs.
- QR Code: useful when the label needs to hold a URL, instructions, or other 2D data.
- Data Matrix: useful for compact square labels on small parts or tight packaging areas.
- UPC-A or EAN-13: use when you already have an official retail product number; do not substitute them for arbitrary internal IDs.

Quiet zones, contrast, and print quality
- Leave clear blank space on both sides of a linear barcode and around a 2D code.
- Use dark bars or modules on a light, non-reflective background.
- Prefer SVG when placing a barcode into artwork that may be resized; use PNG or BMP for simple fixed-size documents.
- Do not stretch a barcode independently in one direction or place borders and text over the quiet zone.
- Print a proof at the final label size. A barcode that looks fine on screen can fail after low-resolution scaling or thermal-printer settings.
Five-step scan test
- Use a real value from the inventory or label system.
- Generate the barcode at the intended width, height, and output type.
- Print it on the actual stock and printer.
- Scan it with the scanner and software used in production.
- Test more than one label and fix sizing, contrast, or placement before the full run.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a barcode smaller if it still scans on my phone?
Not necessarily. Phone cameras and warehouse scanners can have different optics, distances, and decoding behavior. Test with the scanner and printed stock that will be used in the real workflow.
Does a longer value require a taller barcode?
For a linear format such as Code 128, a longer value primarily requires more width. You can also increase height when scanning distance or the scanner setup calls for it, but do not squeeze the bars horizontally.
Should I use SVG for printing?
SVG is a good master format when artwork may be resized. Always verify the final exported or printed result because the label software or printer pipeline can change the output.
